Dongara/Denison is a small coastal twin-town, situated on the Indian Ocean, 365km north of Perth and 65 kms south of Geraldton.
The historical town of Dongara, named from the indigenous word “Dhungarra” which means meeting place of the seals, lies on the banks of the Irwin River. Dongara’s main street, Moreton Terrace, is nestled under a canopy of 100 year old Moreton Bay Fig Trees, providing pleasant and unique passage through the center of the town.
Port Denison is the coastal part of the twin towns and is home to a thriving crayfishing (lobster) industry with more than 70 boats working from the harbour, and surrounding coastal areas. More recently oil has been discovered, and the area is experiencing a lively growth period as a result.
The area is also know as the “wildflower region” and is home to some of the world’s finest collections of flowering plants.
Enjoy the laid back atmosphere and charm of this small coastal village, and indulge yourself with the abundant local produce.
